The power and reach of Asia Pacific cinema featured in Scene by Scene – Films of Asia Pacific, which aired in December in Australia through ABC1 and internationally through Australia Network and International Channel Shanghai, beaming 24/7 to more than 44 countries across Asia, the Pacific and Indian subcontinent.

Episode 1: David Puttnam – Forever in Pursuit

The International Jury President of this year’s Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Lord David Puttnam, is arguably one of the world’s most influential producers. This in depth interview explores Lord Puttnam’s prolific 30-year career, his views on cinema as a medium that has the power to change hearts and minds, and highlights of his keynote address delivered to the APSA nominees  and delegates on the eve of the APSA Ceremony on Australia’s Gold Coast.

Episode 2: Films of Asia Pacific

Celebrating the diversity and reach of cinema from Asia Pacific, Scene by Scene features interviews with the key players from the region’s film industry. The program travels widely from New Zealand, to Iran, to Japan, China and India to hear from the directors, producers and stars of Asia Pacific about the political, religious and cultural challenges they face making films. The program includes highlights from the fourth annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards Ceremony, the region’s highest accolade in film.

Highlights of the program include: the story of New Zealand filmmaker Gaylene Preston and her poetic film memoir, Home By Christmas, based on interviews with her father about the wartime marriage of her parents Ed and Tui; a tribute to women filmmakers and actresses from the region who are at the forefront of the industry, including interviews with Indian acting legend Shabana Azmi; the star of Brick Lane and Road, Movie, Tannishtha Chatterjee; and the woman known as the Queen of Sri Lankan cinema, Malani Fonseka. The program journeys to Iran, where it’s highly regarded film industry is facing escalating challenges to its independence from an increasingly hostile regime, and to China for interviews with the makers of the box office smash hits Aftershock and City of Life and Death.
